Israelis ship eight tera-ops optical processor

"Israeli technology Lenslet has begun shipping what it claims is the world's first optical microprocessor.

We should point out that we're not talking a Pentium or G5 here. Instead, the EnLight 256 is a DSP chip designed to perform a series of simple operations rather than provide a basis for general purpose processing.

However, its use of light rather than electronics enables it to perform up to eight trillion calculations per second - roughly a thousand times faster than semiconductor DSPs, the company claims."

We've Heard This One Before: MS Wants Google

"Folks are talking about the New York Times report that alleges Microsoft is interested in buying Google. The Times story says that Microsoft approached Google within the past couple of months. But this is hardly the first time that Microsoft and Google have talked take-over. Back in June, sounds like similar discussions between the two occurred. None of this is too surprising, given Microsoft's focus on search with Longhorn - as well as its lackluster search efforts to date."

First Look: Microsoft's Windows Longhorn

"Longhorn is the codename for the next-generation version of Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system. It's also the company's most ambitious project since the first Windows NT release. An impressive array of new technologies will be built into the new OS -- a few of which were included in the pre-release version we checked out.

Recently, Jason Brooks wrote about his first impressions of Longhorn for eWeek. Now it's our turn to dig a little deeper and try to understand a bit more about Microsoft's next generation of Windows."

Borland Takes Wraps Off Significant Update To Java IDE

"Borland Software on Tuesday unveiled an upgrade to JBuilder that one company executive called the most significant update to the cross-platform Java IDE in two years.

Taking a page out of Apple's playbook, Borland called the new version of the product JBuilder X. The branding reflects Mac OS X, the next-generation, Unix-based operating system that Apple launched in 2001.

Bill Pataky, director of product management and marketing for Java solutions at Borland, called the branding 'symbolic.' Acknowledging the nod to Apple's branding, Pataky said JBuilder X is the first to support Apple's Mac OS X, now that it supports J2SE 1.4, the latest version of the Java runtime for the desktop. JBuilder X also represents a milestone for Borland: It's the tenth major update to the IDE, which was introduced in 1997."

The PHP Scalability Myth [Oct. 15, 2003]

"PHP scales. There, I said it. The word on the street is that 'Java scales and PHP doesn't.' The word on the street is wrong, and PHP needs someone to stand up and tell the truth: that it does scale.

Those with an open mind who are interested in taking their web development skills and putting them to use building applications in the cross-platform, easy-to-write, easy-to-maintain, scalable, and robust PHP platform, but were hesitant because of the scalability myth, should read on. With update, Mozilla introduces fees

"In an attempt to pick up where Netscape left off with consumer marketing, and perhaps to raise some cash, Mozilla is offering customer support at $39.95 per incident.

With Wednesday's release of Mozilla 1.5, the open-source group founded by Netscape Communications introduced its first for-fee service and the first CD of the software, which costs $5 for shipping and handling.

Mozilla downplayed the revenue-generating value of the new offerings, and cast the decision more in the light of taking on responsibilities formerly carried out by the receding Netscape business, a unit of AOL Time Warner."

Microsoft gets 64bit OS beta happy

"Microsoft gave AMD top billing in a Wednesday statement announcing beta versions of 64bit Windows Server 2003 operating systems.

Right atop Microsoft's brief marketing blurb is news that AMD's 64bit chips will be supported with both Standard and Enterprise editions of Windows Server 2003. The beta software has arrived for MSDN subscribers and 'will soon' be available to the rest of the proles.

Microsoft, of course, already has Windows XP in beta for AMD's Athlon 64 with final release due early next year.

A bit later on its statement, Microsoft salutes its good chum Intel as well. A beta of the Standard edition of Windows Server 2003 is available for Itanium. Microsoft already has the Enterprise and Datacenter flavors of the OS available for public consumption on Intel's 64bit chip."

Linux vs. Windows Viruses

"That SecurityFocus would choose to publish a column designed to perpetuate this myth is a little disappointing, but there you go. What follows is a brief rebuttal of the article.

'None of the Unix or Linux viruses became widespread - most were confined to the laboratory.'

Simply untrue. According to F-Secure, the bot-net created by Linux/Slammer reached around 14,000 machines. Compared to the number of infections caused by some Windows worms, this may seem quite small, but this number is by no means trivial. 14,000 machines focused in a DDoS attack against the root name-servers would easily render the net unusable for a majority of Internet users. The reason we have not seen malicious code exploit recent vulnerabilities in other widely-installed open-source applications is pure luck.

'Even worse, Microsoft's email software is able to infect a user's computer when they do something as innocuous as read an email!' "

SUS SP1 bug

"The cumulative patches for IE are released regally and what the word cumulative says the latest supersedes all the previous ones. So when you approve an IE cumulative patch it is installed on your sus enabled clients.
When a new cumulative patch comes out it updates the previous patch and should remove the previous cumulative patches from the repository or at least the moment you approve the new one. SUS has a mechanism for updated patches, unfortunately SUS keeps previous cumulative patches approved even if you approve the new one.

So when fresh installed client queries the SUS server for updates it gets all the approved IE cumulative patches, which is waist of bandwidth and deploy time.

Microsoft confirmed that this is an issue with SUS 1.0 and will be fixed in SUS 2.0 which is scheduled for release Q1 2004.

To work around this issue the SUS admin should disapprove previous IE cumulative patches when approving a later IE cumulative patch."

Fireworks predicted over MS/Vodafone Web services deal

"Industry observers predict that the rest of the mobile industry could see a partnership between Vodafone and Microsoft as an attempt to hijack existing work on mobile Web services.

The alliance between Microsoft and Vodafone to push the development of mobile Web services is likely to cause ructions within the industry in the months ahead, analysts have predicted.

The two firms announced on Monday that they are joining forces to extend Web services standards to mobile devices. This move, they say, will make it easier for more developers of Web services on PCs to port their efforts to mobile devices.

Microsoft and Vodafone will initially work together to build on existing Web services architecture before sharing their progress with other companies. The industrywide process will begin with a workshop to be held next January."

Microsoft unpacks details of Longhorn storage

"The Longhorn edition of Microsoft's Windows operating system is at least two years away--but the company is revealing some details on how it intends to create a smooth transition from today's Windows PCs.

One of the most significant enhancements to Longhorn is a data storage system called WinFS, technology designed to make information easier to find and view. Clearing up long-standing confusion, a Microsoft senior vice president said that WinFS will work with--not replace--the existing file system in Windows, called NTFS, when WinFS debuts in late 2005 or 2006. NTFS is only one component of the revamped storage system in WinFS. Another key building block is the querying capabilities of Microsoft's SQL Server relational database, according to Microsoft. WinFS also will incorporate the data labeling capabilities of Extensible Markup Language (XML), Bob Muglia said.

One of the ways that WinFS will improve searching across Windows machines is a mechanism to store related 'metadata' with a given file. The metadata will provide more context and keyword information than Windows applications do today. For example, currently a person can use Windows to view when photos were taken. WinFS is being designed to allow a person to search with more specific information, such as who is in the picture. "

The tools, code-named Sonar and Ultrasound, are designed to improve the Windows servers' file replication services and their operation in mixed environments and will be made available in a la carte fashion by the end of the year, said Michael Goulde, senior product planner at Microsoft.

During his discussion on the Windows Server road map at Momentum over the weekend, the Microsoft executive detailed the roster of add-on feature packs due this quarter, including the Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Security Configuration Wizard and an iSCSI Initiator for supporting iSCSI devices to the OS.

And those are just some of the appetizers Microsoft is planning. During the first half of 2004, the company will release Rights Management Services and Software Update Server (SUS) 2.0, said Goulde."

PS3 in Early 2006

"Sony Computer Entertainment have revealed that mass production of the 'cell' microprocessor is due to start in the second half of 2005, a date which suggests that Sony's next console will be on track for a Spring 2006 release in Japan. Once in production it has been suggested that 8 such chips will power Sony's new console.

Initial reports had hinted at a 2007 release claiming that the high expectations for the chip would delay its mass production. SCE's announcement however, suggests that progress in the research phase, the period we are curently in, has been significant and will result in the company meeting a mid-2005 mass production schedule. Sony's ambitions for the chip are great and Toshiba and IBM, its partners in the cell venture are also investing in its development."

It's Official: No Longhorn Until 2006

"Microsoft execs at last have admitted publicly, at last, that Longhorn will not ship in 2005. Does it matter?

At Microsoft's worldwide partner conference this week, Microsoft finally admitted that Longhorn won't see the light of day until 2006. This isn't a guess on my part, educated or otherwise. Or flame bait. Or conjecture. This is straight from the horses' mouths.

At the show this week, several Microsoft execs casually slipped into their presentations that Longhorn is three years away from debut. Last time I did the math, that was not 2005, as promised just a few months ago. Nor is it even the wishy-washy '2005 ' that a few execs had taken to attaching to their product timetables. The new target is 2006, plain and simple."

Microsoft's Raikes Touts Office System 2003 Suite

"Information worker productivity is at a tipping point, becoming a workspace for innovation, integration and teams, with Microsoft itself making a major transition and working with its partners to make this happen, Jeff Raikes, Microsoft's group vice president on productivity and business solutions, said Friday.

Addressing several thousand attendees at the Worldwide Partner Conference, he took a swipe at Linux, open source and StarOffice, saying, 'they simply accept the view that what they have is good enough. That view does not foster innovation. Being where we were with Office 1997 is not good enough for us,' he said. Microsoft Office 2003 shows the new potential of information worker productivity, where services come together to dramatically enhance what people can do together, said Raikes."

Microsoft Dissatisfaction Running High, Users Contemplate Switch

"Almost two-thirds of respondents to a recent InternetWeek Reader Question said they are dissatisfied with Microsoft software, and 41 percent of respondents are at least thinking about switching away from Microsoft software. Only 28 percent of users responding to the poll described themselves as satisfied Microsoft customers.

We asked the question: 'Microsoft users are getting fed up. They're battered by worms, viruses, security patches and increasing enterprise licensing costs. Aggravation has users talking about switching from Microsoft software to something else. We're trying to figure out how much of that talk is just talk, and how much is serious action. Do you seriously plan to dump Microsoft software?' "

Windows security update planned

"Stung by criticism over lax software security, Microsoft Corp. disclosed plans Thursday to update its flagship Windows operating systems early in 2004 to make consumers less vulnerable to hackers.

Microsoft said the changes, announced by chief executive Steve Ballmer during a trade conference in New Orleans, will be offered free in the next “service pack” update to users of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 software, the company’s latest versions for consumers and businesses.

The announcement was aimed at calming Microsoft customers increasingly irritated by the ease with which hackers and others have broken into Windows computers. Adequately protecting an average personal computer can take far more time than many customers are willing to spend."

Next Yukon, Whidbey Betas Due In May

"Microsoft expects to launch Yukon Beta 2 and the Whidbey Beta 1 in May of 2004 with Phase III testing scheduled for August, company executives said on Friday. SQL Server executives gave partners a look under the hood of its Yukon' database at Momentum here, as well as some time lines for its next generation database and Visual Studio development platform.

Yukon Beta 2 and Whidbey Beta 1 will be targeted for release in May for corporate developers and application architects, said Don Petersen, a SQL Server product manager. Further out, Phase III testing, which will involve the release of Yukon Beta 3 and Whidbey Beta 2, is planned for August 2004, he said.

Phase III testing will be expanded to solution providers and systems integrators and will involve Microsoft's field force more aggressively, said Don Petersen, a SQL Server product manager. The End of Free Music Download With Kazaa?

"The world's most popular song-swapping network, Kazaa, has thrown its weight behind a plan to start billing song swappers for their music downloads. The proposal, which could finally end the days of the free lunch for millions of music fans, has been put to big US record labels at the same time as a new legitimate version of the former file-swapping giant Napster is launched in the US.

The idea is to phase in a billing mechanism for peer to peer networks, such as Kazaa and Morpheus, that allow users to copy music directly from each other's hard drives. Initially payments would be by credit card, but in the future downloads would be automatically detected and a charge added to the monthly internet service provider bill. With the success of Apple's iTunes and the launch of the new legal Napster in the US this week, the five big record labels are finally getting behind online music distribution. But they are still turning their backs on the peer to peers seen to support widespread music piracy."

Student faces suit over key to CD locks

"SunnComm Technologies, a developer of CD antipiracy technology, said Thursday that it will likely sue a Princeton student who early this week showed how to evade the company's copy protection by pushing a computer's Shift key.

Princeton Ph.D. student John 'Alex' Halderman published a paper on his Web site on Monday that gave detailed instructions on how to disarm the SunnComm technology, which aims to block unauthorized CD copying and MP3 ripping. The technology is included on an album by Anthony Hamilton that was recently distributed by BMG Music.

On Thursday, SunnComm CEO Peter Jacobs said the company plans legal action and is considering both criminal and civil suits. He said it may charge the student with maligning the company's reputation and, possibly, with violating copyright law that bans the distribution of tools for breaking through digital piracy safeguards.

Microsoft Plans Longhorn Client in 2005, Server in 2006

"Microsoft put a stake in the ground at Momentum by restating plans to ship its next major version of the Windows client in 2005 and the next Windows server in 2006 -- but executives left plenty of room for delays.

As part of its long-term product roadmap revealed to partners at its annual channel show on Friday, Paul Flessner, senior vice president of Microsoft's Server Platform Division, recommitted to shipping the next generation Windows client, code-named Longhorn, in 2005.

The Longhorn Windows Server version will follow in 2006, although that could slip by as much as 18 months after the Longhorn client, Flessner said."

Forget Longhorn: What's Coming Next Year on the Windows Front?

"Microsoft's Windows business unit (luckily) isn't just sitting on its hands until Longhorn is ready to go. Senior VP Will Poole said. For the rest of its fiscal 2004, the team will be working to improve the patch management technology and processes and to enhance productivity via new and more Tablet PCs (running a 2004 version of the XP for Tablet) and wireless networking.

Poole's team also will be working on ways to bring the client and server more closely together 'for better productivity and at better cost,' he said. Microsoft is working to get Windows XP SP2 - the version that will include new security features and is due by mid-2004, out to testers by the end of this year. And it's pushing to find ways to improve app compatibility for upgraders, using its application compatibility toolkit 3.0 and Virtual PC technologies, Poole added."

Installation of security updates by default?

"In the wake of recent widespread worm attacks on the Internet, Microsoft is considering taking an unprecedented step: making automatic download and installation of security updates the default option for Windows and perhaps Microsoft Office. But first, experts say, Microsoft needs to improve the quality of both its patches and the Windows Update system that delivers them.

Despite problems with current patches, many people could be better off with automatic updates as the default (users currently must enable them). A Windows Update download to repair the RPC (remote procedure call) flaw that the Blaster worm exploited had been available nearly a month before Blaster showed up in mid-August, and Blaster didn't affect Windows XP, NT, 2000, and 2003 Server users who installed the patch. But those who don't accept updates probably didn't know about the patch until too late."

Eolas Moves for Injunction Against IE

"Eolas definitely has the upper hand, says Atlanta-based software patent attorney Griff Griffin, and Microsoft might decide that ripping out the guts of its new browser just to avoid Eolas's patent would be far more expensive than simply working out a deal.

Don't pencil in the release date for the next generation of Internet Explorer quite yet.

PayPal launches in UK

"Online payment service PayPal has officially launched its first international site in the UK, which will offer business members fraud protection benefits.

The Seller Protection programme offers fraud protection from chargebacks for qualified transactions. To be part of the programme, sellers will need to have a verified business account and a history of sending out tangible goods in a timely manner.

'PayPal is already being used by a large number of people in the UK to buy and sell locally, regionally and across borders around the world,' said Matt Bannick, general manager of PayPal.

The official launch also sees the reduction or elimination of withdrawal fees for UK members. Normally, the charge of transferring less than £50 to a UK bank from a PayPal account costs £0.50, but this will be reduced to £0.25. Fees will be eliminated completely for withdrawal amounts of £50 and above.

UK and other European members will be supported by PayPal's new European headquarters in Dublin."

Windows, Linux gain in server sales, but what about 'free'?

"Microsoft is moving into a 'dominant role' in the server market, says IDC, 'even as Linux grows.' Which is an intriguing headline to the research outfit's take on the 2002 operating system market, but who's winning?

The data IDC puts forward perhaps speaks of a more even match than 'dominant role' suggests. The company notes that Microsoft's share of new server licence shipments grew from 50.5 per cent in 2001 to 55.1 per cent in 2002, while paid for (aha...) Linux server licences took 23.1 per cent of the market. The paid for market itself grew 9.6 per cent.

You can make several observations from this little pile of data. First, we're talking about new licence shipments here, and as companies do not in general replace their server systems at particularly high-velocity (hence NetWare's continued, commendable, but perhaps slightly perplexing existence), the process has a slow, drip drip effect on installed base. By maintaining, even increasing a little its 50 per cent share of new shipments Microsoft may be slowly turning the game its way, but it remains a long way from ruling the server world. "

USPS Sues Internet Users

"Washington, D.C. - The United States Postal Service surprised citizens and lawmakers today by filing thousands of lawsuits against netizens with active e-mail addresses. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the use of e-mail violates the government-approved monopoly the USPS currently enjoys.

Art Benedum, a lawyer representing the Postal Service, quoted the part of the new law that grants the authority for this action. 'Any business/government agency who has lost money because of services now provided freely by the Internet may sue to regain those funds, so long as their company/agency's name is a four-letter acronym.'

Among the first to be slapped with a lawsuit was 7-year-old Regina Wells, who has been communicating with her father, a Marine in Iraq, via e-mail. When asked if she felt unfairly targeted by this legal action, she responded: 'What'h a lawthoot?'"

Shift key breaks CD copy locks

"A Princeton University student has published instructions for disabling the new anticopying measures being tested on CDs by BMG--and they're as simple as holding down a computer's Shift key.

In a paper published on his Web site this week, Princeton Ph.D. student John Halderman explained how he disabled a new kind of copy-protection technology, distributed as part of a new album by BMG soul artist Anthony Hamilton.

Under normal circumstances, the antipiracy software is automatically loaded onto a Windows machine whenever the Hamilton album is run in a computer's CD drive, making traditional copying or MP3 ripping impossible. However, simply holding down the Shift key prevents Windows' AutoRun feature from loading the copy-protection software, leaving the music free to copy, Halderman said."

User Sues Microsoft on Security

"A 50-year-old Los Angeles mother of two who fell victim to hackers has sued Microsoft seeking damages and an order requiring the vendor to improve its security notification system.

The suit, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that Microsoft's 'eclipsing dominance in desktop software has created a global security risk' as the world's computer networks are now susceptible to 'massive, cascading failures.' The vendor is charged with violating California laws because of unfair and deceptive business practices.

"Matrix" Finale Set for "Zero Hour"

"Warner Bros. has announced that in a whoa-worthy bit of synchronicity The Matrix Revolutions, the concluding chapter in the Wachowski brothers' hit sci-fi trilogy, will be released simultaneously in nearly 70 countries. The man-versus-machine epic starring Keanu Reeves will officially hit theaters on November 5 at what Warners execs call the 'zero hour', the exact same moment across the globe. That means Revolutions will open at 6 a.m. in Los Angeles, 9 a.m. in New York, 2 p.m. in London, 5 p.m. in Moscow, and 11 p.m. in Tokyo.

'It was a thought that came up a long time ago about almost a year ago, and it did not come from the Wachowskis, it actually came from inside the studio,' says Veronica Kwan-Rubinek, president of international distribution at the studio. 'It was something we were thinking about even before Reloaded came out and it took a lot of coordination to make sure all the pieces were in place.' Such a release strategy has never before been attempted by Tinseltown. The closest a studio has come to doing such simultaneous, synchronized release was in May, when Fox opened X2 on the same day in 80 countries, but not at the same hour."

'Based on the information currently available to us, it appears that these changes have had a substantial adverse effect on the core operation of the DNS, on the stability of the Internet, and on the relevant domains, and may have additional adverse effects in the future. These effects appear to be significant, including effects on web browsing, certain email services and applications, sequenced lookup services and a pervasive problem of incompatibility with other established protocols. In addition, the responses of various persons and entities to the changes made by VeriSign may themselves adversely affect the continued effective functioning of the Internet, the DNS and the .com and .net domains. Under these circumstances, the only prudent course of action consistent with ICANN's coordination mission is to insist that VeriSign suspend these changes pending further evaluation and study, including (but certainly not limited to) the public meeting already scheduled by ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee on 7 October in Washington, D.C."

DivX is ready for its sequel. Is Hollywood?

"Digital media upstart DivXNetworks may yet see a Hollywood ending for its controversial video format.

The San Diego-based company is perhaps best known among file swappers, who for years have used its highly regarded DivX compression technology to speed video downloads--with or without the permission of copyright holders. Now DivXNetworks is hoping for a sequel as the technology partner of choice for film studios and consumer-electronics makers working to bridge the Internet and television. The tiny company, which has so far announced a mere $11.5 million in venture capital funding, might just pull it off. By this time next year, DivX-compatible DVD players will likely be standard fare at consumer-electronics outlets in the United States, increasing the pressure on industry giants such as Microsoft and RealNetworks to get their own formats off the PC and onto one of the hottest-selling consumer-electronics devices around.

DivX is still only a little way along the road to media redemption, however, and could yet falter. But the company is beginning to tout some successes, having recently inked a deal with consumer-electronics giant Royal Philips Electronics for a DivX-certified DVD player, now available in Europe. It has also partnered with News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox to encode films for a newly launched airline movie-rental service. 'DVD players are considered the killer app for convergence, and we're way ahead of our competitors on this front,' DivXNetworks CEO Jordan Greenhall said in a recent interview."

Microsoft moves to integrate Windows with BIOS

"A deal with BIOS maker Phoenix Technologies would allow the operating system to directly control hardware. It also raises concerns over who controls the software in PCs . Microsoft has expanded its relationship with BIOS maker Phoenix Technologies in a deal designed to more closely integrate the basic building blocks of the PC with the Windows operating system.

The relationship, announced this week, is designed to make PCs simpler and more reliable, the companies said. The move is likely to put consumer rights advocates on their guard, however, since both Microsoft and Phoenix are involved in plans to integrate digital rights management (DRM) technology at the operating system and hardware level. DRM is designed to give copyright owners more control over how users make use of software and content, but has been criticised as eroding consumer rights.

A BIOS, or basic input/output system, is the software that ties the operating system to a PC's hardware. Traditionally, it has carried out basic tasks such as hardware and system configuration, and has been standardised and simple enough to allow the installation of alternative operating systems, including Linux. Phoenix's Core System Software (CSS) is a next-generation BIOS with a more sophisticated integration of operating system and hardware, for example making it easier for system administrators to remotely monitor the hardware configurations of their systems. CSS is designed for non-PC systems such as blade servers and embedded industrial devices as well as traditional desktops."

DVD Screener disc banned

"Apparently Academy Award voters are going to have see movies the old-fashioned way--in movie theaters.

The major studios have agreed to go along with the Motion Picture Association of America's proposal to stop the sending out DVD and video screeners to those who vote for the Oscars and other Hollywood awards. In recent years, the proliferation of screeners has allowed voters to watch films in the comfort of their own living rooms. But the MPAA sees the wide availability of award-contending films, many of which are just beginning their theatrical runs, as too tempting for pirates who could put make digitally perfect copies available online and on street corners.

And the MPAA and studio bosses don't want to repeat the Napster-fueled downturn of the music biz.

The screen ban was announced Tuesday, just in time for MPAA President and CEO Jack Valenti to announce it before a Senate committee in Washington, D.C. He cited the move as 'a determined commitment to combat digital piracy and to save movie jobs in the future.' Valenti added that '400,000 to 600,000 films are being illegally abducted every day...and the MPAA intends to deploy every weapon at its command' to stop this theft."

Yahoo links up with Microsoft for games

"Fifteen games developed by Microsoft Game Studios are now available online for a fee from Yahoo, the companies said Thursday.

The deal is expected to take the total number of on-demand games from different publishers available on Yahoo Games to 100. New Microsoft titles include 'Dungeon Siege,' 'Flight Simulator 2004,' 'Freelancer' and 'Zoo Tycoon.'

'This relationship gives Yahoo Games the ability to meet the growing demand for direct rental and streaming play via the Internet,' Dan Hart, general manager of Yahoo Games, said in a statement.

Subscription-based online PC gaming is gaining popularity among Internet users. Market research firm IDC predicts that revenue from downloadable PC gaming will grow from $52.7 million in 2003 to more than $760 million in 2007. The spread of broadband is helping Internet companies set up streaming services that let subscribers play PC games directly on their desktop PCs."

Microsoft, Japan group to create OS

"Two global operating system giants have teamed to put a prettier face on everyday electronics.

U.S.-based software giant Microsoft has teamed with Japanese non-profit group T-Engine Forum to develop a 'two-in-one' operating system for network appliances and other electronic devices. The Japan-based T-Engine Forum, comprising 250 companies, oversees Tron (The Real-time Operation system Nucleus), the world's most widely-installed operating system. It is used in everything from digital cameras, engine management systems to fax machines to office copiers.

'Nearly 100 percent of the operating systems used in cell phones now being sold in Japan are Tron,' University of Tokyo professor Sakamura Ken was quoted as saying in Look Japan magazine last year. He was a member of the team which created Tron, which was released into the public domain, free of license fees, in 1984. 'It isn't a household name like the names of personal computer operating systems because it is used in products and devices, but worldwide there are one billion copies in use, tens of times more than Microsoft's OS,' he said in the report."

THX to certify sound of video games

"THX, the sound company started by movie director George Lucas to ensure that fans heard his films the way he intended, said Tuesday that it would begin granting its seal of approval to audio produced for video games.

The move could help improve the sound on video games, but it could also lend a measure of credibility to games at a time when the gaming industry sees itself as being as important in the entertainment landscape as movies, TV and music. San Rafael, Calif.-based THX said Electronic Arts, the largest video game publisher, was the first to achieve THX certification for its games. Five EA games--'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,' 'SSX 3,' 'Medal of Honor Rising Sun,' 'Need for Speed Underground' and 'James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing,' will be THX Certified Games upon their release and carry logos on their box as well as pregame trailers.

'You're actually giving the game guys the opportunity to have a standard very similar to broadcast and movies,' said Mark Tuffy, THX's director of advanced technology. He said that during the past five to six years, many companies have approached THX with the idea of doing THX-certified video games, but his company was not seriously interested until its spin-off from Lucas' Lucasfilm 18 months ago. As games have grown in popularity and deepened their hold on mass-market audiences, sound has become an increasingly important factor for publishers who recognize the power of high-profile soundtracks and realistic audio effects."

StarCraft, Diablo II, and Warcraft III Accounts Closed

"A number of additional accounts and CD Keys have been tied to the use of a hack or cheat program while playing StarCraft, Diablo II, or Warcraft III on Battle.net. In keeping with our aggressive stance against cheating, we have permanently closed 276,000 StarCraft accounts, 86,000 Diablo II accounts, and 41,000 Warcraft III accounts. We have documented all of the CD Keys that were used with these accounts. 14,000 Warcraft III CD Keys have been banned from ladder play for one month and 2,000 CD Keys are banned from ladder play permanently. Repeat offenders risk having their CD Keys disabled, which will result in the permanent removal of the respective copy of StarCraft, Diablo II, or Warcraft III from Battle.net.

We have also identified the Diablo II accounts with which a 'map-hack' program is being used. Diablo II map-hack programs give players who use them an unfair advantage over other players. As with any third-party program, using a map-hack affects play over Battle.net and violates our End User License Agreement. Diablo II accounts that continue to be used with a map-hack program are subject to closure and the CD Keys with which these accounts are being used are also subject to being disabled. "

GPL will not pass the legal test -SCO

"The SCO Group is extending its royalty campaign to encompass Silicon Graphics Inc. The company says it will revoke SGI's Irix license on October 14. It's no surprise, as SCO CEO Darl McBride has explicitly mentioned SGI over a month ago. SGI signed the license with AT&T in 1986.

SGI's response is exactly the same as IBM's, when threatened with revocation. The Mountain View systems company says the license is paid for and irrevocable. When SCO revoked IBM's license, IBM countersued and simply carried on selling AIX.

Is SCO serious? The news emerged from of a SEC filing by Silicon Graphics. SCO didn't trumpet its intentions in a press release.

On Monday, however, SCO responded to IBM's amended case, which explicitly cites SCO's violations of the GPL, the General Public License. SCO's press release with a line which will seem very familiar to Register readers. 'The GPL has never faced a full legal test, and SCO believes that it will not stand up in court. We are confident that SCO will win the legal battle that IBM has now started over the GPL.' "
