Pentium V will launch in January 2004

"The chip will sample internally at Intel in January 2004 and will take between four to six months to get to market. The Pentium 6 will follow a very similar schedule.

The Pentium V is likely to fly along at between 5GHz to 7GHz, have 2MB plus of level two cache, be built on a 90 nanometer process, and have a stackable design.

The processor we believe, sits in the LGA 775 pin socket, and above it is a very thin heatsink. But, according to sources close to the firm's plans, another permeable heatsink can sit between this and another microprocessor module, giving a stackable design.

The final design of this arrangement is not set in stone. According to this source, and the details have not been confirmed, a module sitting on top could provide 64-bit extensions.

The idea seems to be that people can buy a 32-bit module, and then add in the 64-bit processor. There are three samples of an arrangement of the Pentium V here in Taiwan this week, with a very thin processor and lots of wires and patches stuck on it, just to show proof of concept."

Nokia hits on smartphones, cheats on investors and says that Java is unsatisfactory

Nokia cheats on investors, not only because prices of cell phones are falling and margins decreasing, not only because stock price of Nokia is far from satisfactory, but also because Nokia gives false impressions to them:

Part of the problem, is that investors at the moment are not feeling charitable toward Nokia´s management team. Lin of American Technology Research says that going into the latest conference call, the company had given the impression that results could benefit from favorable exchange rates -- but it didn´t turn out that way. The company´s complex hedging strategies muffled a top-line boost the Street had expected from exchange rates. Says Lin: "There was a group that felt sort of cheated on the guidance."

Security Rollup Update Delayed Further / Windows XP SP2

"A couple of days ago, we mentioned that the Security Rollup Update for Windows XP SP1 would be delayed due to an unforeseen problem with a DLL file relating to DirectX, which has put an updated version of the security rollup into the beta testing cycle again (available to Windows Update V4 Beta Testers). Since then, 3 new risks have been identified and these fixes will be integrated into the rollup in order to cover subsequent variants of MSBlast, the DirectX issues and one relating to the NetBIOS/memory read issues. The current update rollup released on Wednesday already includes two of the three fixes, with the third to be added as low priority when released to the web. We could be looking at three weeks from now before this is RTW.

News has also surfaced that Service Pack 2 for Windows XP will be released earlier than expected, it has been moved in schedule - tentative for March-April RTW. The Windows Service Pack Road Map hasn't been updated to reflect this, but it does mention the mid-2004 date as being an estimate. There is also the possibility that an interim SP2 will be issued to OEMs in Nov/Dec as an installer patch for Christmas Retail Systems. It is currently in build phase, but incomplete as yet, so no promises but it is in the pipeline so there might be something available before the end of year to end users"

Pentium V will launch with 64-bit Windows Elements

"Details have emerged of the future design of Intel's Tejas/Pentium V processor, and of how the chip firm will present it to the world. Author of report critical of Microsoft loses job

"The chief technology officer for a technology firm that works closely with Microsoft Corp. lost his job after he helped write a study critical of the insecurity of Microsoft software.

Daniel E. Geer Jr., an expert with nearly three decades studying technology and computer security, learned Thursday he was no longer employed by AtStake Inc. of Cambridge, Mass.

AtStake declined to say whether Geer resigned or was fired. Spokeswoman Lona Therrien said Microsoft did not call for Geer's dismissal, which AtStake said was effective two days ago. Microsoft also said it was not involved in the decision.

But critics said Geer's firing was reflective of Microsoft's far-reaching ability in Washington and across the technology industry to silence experts who complain about weaknesses in its software or its aggressive business practices. The Justice Department struggled years ago to find technology executives willing to testify against Microsoft in its antitrust trial."

'Microsoft has been representing to the world that they have no choice but to remove technology from the browser and disrupt the Internet,' Doyle said in an interview Friday. New ISO fees on the horizon?

"Information technology standards groups are raising warning flags over a proposal that could raise fees for commonly-used industry codes, including two-letter country abbreviations, used in many commercial software products.

At stake is a tentative proposal from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to add usage royalties for several code standards, a move that opponents say could weaken standards adherence by forcing software providers to pay a fee for each ISO-compliant product they sell. The standards--ISO 3166, ISO 4217, ISO 639--cover country, currency and language codes, respectively.

IT standards groups are rallying opposition to an ISO proposal to introduce usage royalties for widely adopted standards, including country codes.

Critics say the proposal could weaken standards adherence by forcing software providers to pay a fee for each ISO-compliant product they sell. The backlash illustrates growing sensitivity in software circles over belated intellectual property claims."

Java camp takes cue from Microsoft

"If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Microsoft's fiercest foes--Java software providers--are showing growing admiration for their powerful rival. The leading Java adherents--Sun Microsystems, BEA Systems, IBM and Oracle--have ratcheted up efforts to attract software developers through a tried-and-true Microsoft strategy: offering easy-to-use tools to drive adoption of more expensive server software.

The goal is to make Java the preferred software for building and deploying Web services applications, thereby driving sales of related software, including application servers, portal software and integration servers. Microsoft's successful Visual Basic tools, which allow developers to quickly build corporate applications, have long helped propel the growth of Windows-based software, particularly on desktop PCs. Since its emergence in the mid-1990s, Java, too, has been extremely successful. Java is used by millions of professional programmers, and Java-based server software is the only real alternative to Microsoft's .Net Web services software."

Sun steals page from Microsoft's playbook

Sun Microsystems this week will take the covers off its long-hyped Project Orion and Project Mad Hatter at the SunNetwork conference in San Francisco. To strengthen its position as a serious enterprise software player, the company is counting on a tightly integrated software set that leverages its Solaris OS at bargain-basement prices. Ironically, this approach seems to take a page from Sun’s nemesis, Microsoft. “When you look at Orion, it’s very analogous to what Microsoft has been saying over the years,” said Stephen O’Grady, an analyst at RedMonk.

News: Microsoft goes to Hollywood

"Microsoft's surprise decision to submit Windows Media Series 9 as a standards candidate to Hollywood underscores the software giant's ambitions to take its multimedia technology beyond the Net, as well as the considerable barriers it faces.

This week, the Redmond, Wash.-based company sent in its underlying video-compression code for vetting by the Society of Motion Picture Television Engineers (SMPTE)--a first for Microsoft and a marked departure from the company's longtime commitment to keeping its technology proprietary. In doing so, Microsoft is aiming to provide a viable successor to MPEG-2, a compression standard that is the foundation of satellite, cable, video-editing systems and DVDs.

Microsoft submitted its technology to SMPTE on Monday, but waited until Friday to officially announce both that move and a blizzard of new Windows Media partnerships. The announcments were made at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam."

IE patent endgame detailed

"Microsoft has suffered another legal setback in the patent dispute with software developer Eolas and is now advising Web authors on workarounds, as new details emerge of its plans to tweak Internet Explorer.

A federal judge last week rejected Microsoft's post-trial claim that Eolas had misrepresented the facts in the patent case, which claimed the software giant had stolen browser technology relating to plug-ins. The ruling came after a $521 million verdict against the software giant last month, and ends Microsoft's first attempt to challenge the result.

Several more post-trial motions remain to be dispensed, and Microsoft doesn't expect a final judgment in this round to be handed down until October or November. After that, Microsoft has 30 days to decide whether to appeal, which it has pledged to do."

Oracle earnings rise despite slowed sales

"update Oracle reported on-target first-quarter earnings Friday that rose 28 percent over the same period last year, despite a downturn in new software license sales.

The Redwood Shores-based company reported net income of $440 million on revenue of $2.07 billion, or 8 cents per share for the quarter, compared with $342.7 million on revenue of $2.03 billion, or 6 cents a share, for the year-ago quarter. The earnings matched projections from analysts surveyed by First Call.

Oracle reported that software license sales were down 7 percent to $525 million in its fiscal first quarter, while software license renewals and support contracts sales rose by 14 percent to $1 million. First-quarter operating margin was 30 percent versus 29 percent last year, the company said."

Windows Update V5 is slated to be a significant upgrade, eventually extending the service's reach beyond Windows to all Microsoft products. The company will initially support updates to Office 2003, as well as SQL and Exchange.

The first test version -- what Microsoft calls 'the Alpha' release -- of V5 will launch in late September, according to the company. Subsequent updates will be made every two or three months.

Microsoft settles Be suit for $23 million

"Microsoft announced late Friday that it will pay more than $23 million to settle an antitrust suit filed by onetime operating system rival Be.

Microsoft did not admit wrongdoing in the settlement, in which Be will receive $23.2 million after attorneys' fees. The total amount Microsoft will pay was not immediately clear from a joint statement by the two companies.

'Both parties are satisfied with the agreement and believe that it is fair and reasonable,' the companies said in a statement. In the suit, Be had charged that Microsoft's anticompetitive efforts led to the company's destruction, with the software maker's efforts having thwarted deals that would have put the company's OS onto major name brand PCs."

New Office locks down documents

"As digital media publishers scramble to devise a foolproof method of copy protection, Microsoft is ready to push digital rights management into a whole new arena--your desktop.

Office 2003, the upcoming update of the company's market-dominating productivity package, for the first time will include tools for restricting access to documents created with the software. Office workers can specify who can read or alter a spreadsheet, block it from copying or printing, and set an expiration date. The technology is one of the first major steps in Microsoft's plan to popularize Windows Rights Management Services, a wide-ranging plan to make restricted access to information a standard part of business processes."

Guide: How to Reinstall Windows Without Losing Your Data

"Over time, Windows loses stability. If you keep a computer for more than two years, at some point you're going to have to bite the bullet and reinstall Windows from scratch. But contrary to popular belief, you won't have to reformat your hard drive (with one exception, discussed below). The bad stuff you need to get rid of is all in your Windows folder.

Before you begin, gather your Windows and application CD-ROMs. Back up your data files (just to be safe), and then clear two days off your calendar. If everything goes smoothly, you can reinstall Windows in a few hours. But you have to assume something will go wrong: You may not be able to find a necessary CD, or data won't be where you thought it was, or something will simply refuse to work.

There's a difference between a repair reinstall and a complete reinstall. Though a repair (also called a refresh) will let you keep your current settings, a complete reinstall will give you a truly fresh version of Windows. Repairs are fast and easy, but they don't fix anywhere near as many problems. The instructions below are for total reinstalls, except where noted."
