Microsoft asks Linux users, "How can we get your business?'

"Microsoft has started distributing two online surveys to Linux User Groups and Linux users in general, one asking primarily about home computer use, the other about business use. They apparently don't plan to release the results of their surveys, so we and other people in the open source community are asking you to look at them and post your answers and comments here and on other appropriate sites where, in open source style, everyone can see them. Read on for more information and links, and please help spread the word about these surveys; as far as we know, this is the first time Microsoft has asked Linux users why we use Linux instead of their products, and the more results, the merrier."

Real sues Microsoft, seeks $1bn damages

"Emboldened by its reception before the European Commission in Brussels last month, RealNetworks is to sue Microsoft for alleged anti-competitive behavior.

'We believe our business would be substantially larger today if Microsoft were playing by the rules,' said Real's founder and former Microsoft executive Rob Glaser in a statement.

Real will seek more than $1 billion in damages, and expects the litigation to cost $12 million and take three years to complete. However, since the company is seeking 'injunctive relief', an early decision could come sooner rather than later. Real's annual revenue is around $200 million, based on its most recent earnings."

Judge Tells SCO: No, *You* Have to Show the Code

"The big news from the hearing today is that Judge Wells told SCO that they have to go first. They have to show IBM what code they are alleging is infringing. All during discovery, SCO has been telling IBM they had to show all their code first, and then SCO would identify the alleged infringements. IBM kept telling SCO in reply that they had the burden, as plaintiffs, to at least tell IBM what code was involved. Today the judge told SCO that IBM was right. SCO has 30 days to comply. IBM doesn't have to turn over anything until they do it. The judge's order will be filed Wednesday, and SCO has a month to show the code. They can't force IBM to go first. That dance is over."

Microsoft Giving Away SFU 3.0

When Microsoft Services for Unix 3.0 came out, a highlight was its surprisingly low price tag. In a promotion running through the end of this month, the set of tools and services for interoperating between Windows, Unix and Linux is free.

The giveaway presumably is designed to generate some new users who will then want the latest features available in SFU 3.5, which entered beta testing in late July and should be released soon.

The widely acclaimed SFU 3.0 came out in the second quarter of 2002. It was a much expanded product over SFU 2.0, as Microsoft combined the SFU feature set -- for integrating Windows-based and Unix-based networks -- with the Microsoft Interix product. Interix, which Microsoft acquired from Softway Systems in 1999, allows developers and administrators to migrate and run Unix applications on Windows servers.

The SFU 3.0 giveaway started Oct. 16, and Microsoft is promoting it in the customer-focused e-mail newsletters it sends out. Microsoft also offers a three-hour test drive of SFU 3.0 running on a remote Windows Server 2003 box hosted by or for Microsoft.

The free SFU 3.0 and the test drive are available at Microsoft's 'Resources for Unix Professionals' site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/unixproresources/

PS3 "concept image" hits the web

A picture purporting to be concept art of Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 3, has been circulated on the Internet, showing a sleek silver console with a slot-loading DVD drive.

So, is this an early glimpse of the future of console entertainment? We have our doubts, since although we've been unable to confirm where the image originated, it doesn't appear to have been officially released by Sony - unlike last month's PSP concept images, which appeared in a presentation given by SCE boss Ken Kutaragi.

Indeed, a highly placed source within Sony stated that he'd never seen the concept design shown in the image before - although he did concede that it 'could be something Japan cooked up and hasn't shown us,' he was adamant that he thought it highly unlikely that the image originated from Sony.

So what we're left with, perhaps unsurprisingly, is a very clever and well-implemented mock-up of the forthcoming console, which probably bears no resemblance to the final product. It does look nice though, doesn't it?

Is That Microsoft Calling?

Software giant could change the way we communicate by telephone.

Microsoft is bound to play a growing role in enterprise telephony systems over the next few years, helping them to evolve beyond the simple features such as speed dial, conference call, and voice mail most companies know today. What's less clear is what that role will be.

The Redmond, Washington, software giant is likely to muscle in on the territory of traditional vendors of private branch exchanges (PBXs) and even threaten the desktop handset, through PC-based 'soft phones,' according to some industry analysts. However, Microsoft and some major vendors in that market say they don't see themselves on a collision course. Microsoft may increasingly provide the platform software for telephony, but more specialized vendors will write the applications on top, they said.

WinFX: An All-Managed API [Nov. 24, 2003]

"In Longhorn, Win32 will no longer be the principal API. It will, of course, continue to be supported; 20-year-old DOS applications still run on the latest version of Windows, and likewise, Win32 applications will also continue to work for the foreseeable future. But just as DOS and 16-bit Windows applications were superseded by Win32 applications, so in Longhorn will Win32 become the 'old way' of doing things. In Win32's place is a new API called WinFX (pronounced 'Win Effects'). WinFX is a significant milestone in the history of the Windows API, as it puts .NET at the center of the platform. While Win32, the main API for previous versions of Windows, is a C-style API, WinFX is designed primarily to be used by .NET languages. In other words, it is a managed API. Moreover, it is a superset of the existing .NET Framework."

SCO's Linux Case: Is Winning Everything?

As the SCO Group prepares to battle at least one Linux user in court, legal experts said that the company's strategy is less about the legal merits of its claims and more about compelling additional Linux users into paying its license fees.

Earlier this week, the SCO Group said it planned within 90 days to sue a Linux user over copyright infringement related to its Unix System V code that it alleges is included in Linux. The move marked an expansion of the Lindon, Utah-based company's legal wrangle over Linux, which began with its high profile lawsuit against IBM.

Nokia's N-Gage suffers blow as hackers crack games security code

"Nokia (news - web sites)'s foray onto the mobile entertainment market, the N-Gage gaming deck, was dealt a blow this week when hackers were able to crack the security codes protecting its games from being pirated, with illegal copies being posted on the Internet.

This means the games can now be downloaded by anybody and will work on any handset running Nokia's Series 60 software platform, used in N-Gage and its 3650 and 7650 camera phones, as well as some models made by Siemens and UK-based Sendo."

Sun's StarOffice Still Can't Rival Microsoft

"It has been years since Microsoft had any real competition for its Office productivity suite the software package that includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Once-popular competitors like WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3 have been reduced to tiny niche players.

But there is a competing office suite that is the darling of those companies, software developers and users who have made hating or battling Microsoft into a sort of religion. It's called StarOffice, and is sold by Sun Microsystems, a maker of high-end hardware and software that is one of Microsoft's biggest critics."

Microsoft prepares security assault on Linux

"In a sign that the inroads made by the Open Source community are starting to rattle the software giant, Microsoft has hired several analysts to review how fast holes are patched in the open source software and is expected to announce that Windows compares favorably.

The strategy, called 'Days of Risk,' measures the number of days it takes programmers to release a public patch after a vulnerability is revealed. While high-profile holes in Linux and associated software tend to be swiftly dealt with, less prominent problems -- which could be just as potentially damaging -- can take weeks or even months to appear."

Intel ships $925 Pentium 4 Extreme Edition

"Intel today released its Pentium 4 Extreme Edition - the exceptionally expensive gamer-oriented version of the chip giant's desktop processor - as we reported last week.

As anticipated, the chip will cost $925 a throw.

The chip is clocked to 3.2GHz and features 2MB of on-die L3 cache alongside its 512KB L2 cache. Like other P4s, it supports HyperThreading, a frontside bus with an effective bit rate of 800MHz and is fabbed at 130nm. The P4EE is compatible with the existing i865 and i875 chipset families, said Intel."

8.5GB DVD+R discs, drives to ship April '04

"Expect double-layer, almost double-capacity DVD+R drives and media to hit the stores next April, members of the DVD+RW alliance say. The technology, co-developed by drive maker Philips, and media specialists Verbatim and Mitsubishi Kagaku, adds a second recording layer to a standard-thickness DVD+R disc, taking the medium's capacity from 4.7GB to 8.5GB.

That's enough for four hours of DVD-quality material, 16 hours of VHS-quality content or two hours' archive footage. The discs are playback-compatible with existing DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. Initial products will offer a write speed of 2.4x.

DVD+R DL, as the technology is known, was demo'd last month in Japan and shown to the press in London last week. Alliance members said the next step is to publish the format's specifications, a process which should be complete this year. Officially, the Alliance says DVD+R DL hardware and media will ship during 'the course of 2004', but privately a number of member companies said they are 'hoping' for an April 2004 introduction."

Emulation is Free Game

"The Library of Congress has recently granted copyright exemptions in the Digital Millenium Act to obsolete games. The exemption applies to games that require the original hardware as a condition of access, and if the game is “no longer manufactured or reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.” This means that old, unsupported PC, console and arcade games will now be legal to own (so your illegal copy of Mame roms are now legit). The only muddy side is if publishers consider their old games to be “reasonably available” and plan to release classic games as bundles or bonuses, then the copyright protection still stands."

"Israeli technology Lenslet has begun shipping what it claims is the world's first optical microprocessor.

We should point out that we're not talking a Pentium or G5 here. Instead, the EnLight 256 is a DSP chip designed to perform a series of simple operations rather than provide a basis for general purpose processing.

However, its use of light rather than electronics enables it to perform up to eight trillion calculations per second - roughly a thousand times faster than semiconductor DSPs, the company claims."

Borland Takes Wraps Off Significant Update To Java IDE

"Borland Software on Tuesday unveiled an upgrade to JBuilder that one company executive called the most significant update to the cross-platform Java IDE in two years.

Taking a page out of Apple's playbook, Borland called the new version of the product JBuilder X. The branding reflects Mac OS X, the next-generation, Unix-based operating system that Apple launched in 2001.

Bill Pataky, director of product management and marketing for Java solutions at Borland, called the branding 'symbolic.' Acknowledging the nod to Apple's branding, Pataky said JBuilder X is the first to support Apple's Mac OS X, now that it supports J2SE 1.4, the latest version of the Java runtime for the desktop. JBuilder X also represents a milestone for Borland: It's the tenth major update to the IDE, which was introduced in 1997."

Microsoft gets 64bit OS beta happy

"Microsoft gave AMD top billing in a Wednesday statement announcing beta versions of 64bit Windows Server 2003 operating systems.

Right atop Microsoft's brief marketing blurb is news that AMD's 64bit chips will be supported with both Standard and Enterprise editions of Windows Server 2003. The beta software has arrived for MSDN subscribers and 'will soon' be available to the rest of the proles.

Microsoft, of course, already has Windows XP in beta for AMD's Athlon 64 with final release due early next year.

A bit later on its statement, Microsoft salutes its good chum Intel as well. A beta of the Standard edition of Windows Server 2003 is available for Itanium. Microsoft already has the Enterprise and Datacenter flavors of the OS available for public consumption on Intel's 64bit chip."

Linux vs. Windows Viruses

"That SecurityFocus would choose to publish a column designed to perpetuate this myth is a little disappointing, but there you go. What follows is a brief rebuttal of the article.

'None of the Unix or Linux viruses became widespread - most were confined to the laboratory.'

Simply untrue. According to F-Secure, the bot-net created by Linux/Slammer reached around 14,000 machines. Compared to the number of infections caused by some Windows worms, this may seem quite small, but this number is by no means trivial. 14,000 machines focused in a DDoS attack against the root name-servers would easily render the net unusable for a majority of Internet users. The reason we have not seen malicious code exploit recent vulnerabilities in other widely-installed open-source applications is pure luck.

'Even worse, Microsoft's email software is able to infect a user's computer when they do something as innocuous as read an email!' "

SUS SP1 bug

"The cumulative patches for IE are released regally and what the word cumulative says the latest supersedes all the previous ones. So when you approve an IE cumulative patch it is installed on your sus enabled clients.
When a new cumulative patch comes out it updates the previous patch and should remove the previous cumulative patches from the repository or at least the moment you approve the new one. SUS has a mechanism for updated patches, unfortunately SUS keeps previous cumulative patches approved even if you approve the new one.

So when fresh installed client queries the SUS server for updates it gets all the approved IE cumulative patches, which is waist of bandwidth and deploy time.

Microsoft confirmed that this is an issue with SUS 1.0 and will be fixed in SUS 2.0 which is scheduled for release Q1 2004.

To work around this issue the SUS admin should disapprove previous IE cumulative patches when approving a later IE cumulative patch."

Fireworks predicted over MS/Vodafone Web services deal

"Industry observers predict that the rest of the mobile industry could see a partnership between Vodafone and Microsoft as an attempt to hijack existing work on mobile Web services.

The alliance between Microsoft and Vodafone to push the development of mobile Web services is likely to cause ructions within the industry in the months ahead, analysts have predicted.

The two firms announced on Monday that they are joining forces to extend Web services standards to mobile devices. This move, they say, will make it easier for more developers of Web services on PCs to port their efforts to mobile devices.

Microsoft and Vodafone will initially work together to build on existing Web services architecture before sharing their progress with other companies. The industrywide process will begin with a workshop to be held next January."

Windows XP SP2 to be 'Springboard' to Longhorn

"If you're wondering why Microsoft is taking so long to release Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), wonder no more: The company is working to back-port various Longhorn security technologies into SP2, providing a mid-ground between the default security found in XP and that which will be available in its next major desktop OS. Code-named 'Springboard,' the new security features include an updated version of the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), which adds outbound scanning capabilities and other features previously found only in Microsoft's enterprise server product, Internet Security & Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000."

MySQL Buys Alzato, Clustering Technology

"MySQL has acquired Alzato, a maker of clustering technology for data management systems.

MySQL, based in Uppsala, Sweden, made its name offering Linux databases under both the open-source General Public License and commercially. The integration of NDB Clusters from Alzato could make MySQL more attractive for high-end database applications requiring real-time performance and maximum uptime, the companies said.

The clustering technology scales to up to 32 nodes and 'will extend the cost-efficient scalability of MySQL to provide carrier-grade availability and high throughput in a clustered environment,' said Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL in a statement."

Microsoft unpacks details of Longhorn storage

"The Longhorn edition of Microsoft's Windows operating system is at least two years away--but the company is revealing some details on how it intends to create a smooth transition from today's Windows PCs.

One of the most significant enhancements to Longhorn is a data storage system called WinFS, technology designed to make information easier to find and view. Clearing up long-standing confusion, a Microsoft senior vice president said that WinFS will work with--not replace--the existing file system in Windows, called NTFS, when WinFS debuts in late 2005 or 2006. NTFS is only one component of the revamped storage system in WinFS. Another key building block is the querying capabilities of Microsoft's SQL Server relational database, according to Microsoft. WinFS also will incorporate the data labeling capabilities of Extensible Markup Language (XML), Bob Muglia said.

One of the ways that WinFS will improve searching across Windows machines is a mechanism to store related 'metadata' with a given file. The metadata will provide more context and keyword information than Windows applications do today. For example, currently a person can use Windows to view when photos were taken. WinFS is being designed to allow a person to search with more specific information, such as who is in the picture. "

Microsoft plans Wi-Fi enhancements for Windows

"Users of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP operating system will soon be able to take advantage of a new software enhancement that the U.S. software company claims will offer faster, easier and more secure access to broadband wireless networks. With its new Wireless Provisioning Services (WPS) technology, Microsoft aims at helping not only business and private users connect to Wi-Fi hotspots more easily and securely, but also telecommunication operators provision and manage these networks more simply and cost-efficiently, Microsoft said Sunday in a statement released at the Telecom World 2003 conference and exhibition in Geneva. The event is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), an arm of the United Nations (UN)."

Israel slams the door on Microsoft

"In a bold assertion of independence, Israel has thrown the full weight of its antitrust legislation at Microsoft.

The Israeli Ministry of Commerce has suspended all governmental contracts with Microsoft, and indicated that the ban will last throughout 2004. The de facto suspension means no upgrades for the duration, at a time when Microsoft is looking to roll out its Office 2003 upgrade; and the Ministry is said to be examining OpenOffice as an alternative. It's a consequence of a much-anticipated legal verdict: Israeli Antitrust Authority director general Dror Strum has finally acknowledged that Microsoft is a monopoly"

Opera 7.21 Final for Windows

"Opera was the first browser to introduce a multiple document interface (MDI), making it possible to surf in several windows at once. Now Opera further advances this feature by introducing an 'Undo' functionality. If users now close a window by mistake, it's easy to recall by referring to the 'Closed' window history list now added to the menu or using a keyboard shortcut, Ctrl Z. Kiosk mode is reintroduced with Opera 7.21, as was previously implemented in Opera 6. Kiosk mode is a customizable browser setting to limit functionality, blocking menus, preventing downloads, or adjusting other system preferences. Opera's kiosk mode is the most secure way to restrict access appropriate for computer labs, libraries and other kiosk providers."

Microsoft Readies Add-Ons for Windows Server 2003

"Microsoft is prepping new troubleshooting and monitoring tools for Windows Server 2003 as part of a menu of server add-ons due this quarter, said one executive at the Momentum conference in New Orleans.

The tools, code-named Sonar and Ultrasound, are designed to improve the Windows servers' file replication services and their operation in mixed environments and will be made available in a la carte fashion by the end of the year, said Michael Goulde, senior product planner at Microsoft.

During his discussion on the Windows Server road map at Momentum over the weekend, the Microsoft executive detailed the roster of add-on feature packs due this quarter, including the Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Security Configuration Wizard and an iSCSI Initiator for supporting iSCSI devices to the OS.

And those are just some of the appetizers Microsoft is planning. During the first half of 2004, the company will release Rights Management Services and Software Update Server (SUS) 2.0, said Goulde."

PS3 in Early 2006

"Sony Computer Entertainment have revealed that mass production of the 'cell' microprocessor is due to start in the second half of 2005, a date which suggests that Sony's next console will be on track for a Spring 2006 release in Japan. Once in production it has been suggested that 8 such chips will power Sony's new console.

Initial reports had hinted at a 2007 release claiming that the high expectations for the chip would delay its mass production. SCE's announcement however, suggests that progress in the research phase, the period we are curently in, has been significant and will result in the company meeting a mid-2005 mass production schedule. Sony's ambitions for the chip are great and Toshiba and IBM, its partners in the cell venture are also investing in its development."

It's Official: No Longhorn Until 2006

"Microsoft execs at last have admitted publicly, at last, that Longhorn will not ship in 2005. Does it matter?

At Microsoft's worldwide partner conference this week, Microsoft finally admitted that Longhorn won't see the light of day until 2006. This isn't a guess on my part, educated or otherwise. Or flame bait. Or conjecture. This is straight from the horses' mouths.

At the show this week, several Microsoft execs casually slipped into their presentations that Longhorn is three years away from debut. Last time I did the math, that was not 2005, as promised just a few months ago. Nor is it even the wishy-washy '2005 ' that a few execs had taken to attaching to their product timetables. The new target is 2006, plain and simple."

Microsoft's Raikes Touts Office System 2003 Suite

"Information worker productivity is at a tipping point, becoming a workspace for innovation, integration and teams, with Microsoft itself making a major transition and working with its partners to make this happen, Jeff Raikes, Microsoft's group vice president on productivity and business solutions, said Friday.

Addressing several thousand attendees at the Worldwide Partner Conference, he took a swipe at Linux, open source and StarOffice, saying, 'they simply accept the view that what they have is good enough. That view does not foster innovation. Being where we were with Office 1997 is not good enough for us,' he said. Microsoft Office 2003 shows the new potential of information worker productivity, where services come together to dramatically enhance what people can do together, said Raikes."

Microsoft Dissatisfaction Running High, Users Contemplate Switch

"Almost two-thirds of respondents to a recent InternetWeek Reader Question said they are dissatisfied with Microsoft software, and 41 percent of respondents are at least thinking about switching away from Microsoft software. Only 28 percent of users responding to the poll described themselves as satisfied Microsoft customers.

We asked the question: 'Microsoft users are getting fed up. They're battered by worms, viruses, security patches and increasing enterprise licensing costs. Aggravation has users talking about switching from Microsoft software to something else. We're trying to figure out how much of that talk is just talk, and how much is serious action. Do you seriously plan to dump Microsoft software?' "

Windows security update planned

"Stung by criticism over lax software security, Microsoft Corp. disclosed plans Thursday to update its flagship Windows operating systems early in 2004 to make consumers less vulnerable to hackers.

Microsoft said the changes, announced by chief executive Steve Ballmer during a trade conference in New Orleans, will be offered free in the next “service pack” update to users of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 software, the company’s latest versions for consumers and businesses.

The announcement was aimed at calming Microsoft customers increasingly irritated by the ease with which hackers and others have broken into Windows computers. Adequately protecting an average personal computer can take far more time than many customers are willing to spend."
