Forget Longhorn: What's Coming Next Year on the Windows Front?

"Microsoft's Windows business unit (luckily) isn't just sitting on its hands until Longhorn is ready to go. Senior VP Will Poole said. For the rest of its fiscal 2004, the team will be working to improve the patch management technology and processes and to enhance productivity via new and more Tablet PCs (running a 2004 version of the XP for Tablet) and wireless networking.

Poole's team also will be working on ways to bring the client and server more closely together 'for better productivity and at better cost,' he said. Microsoft is working to get Windows XP SP2 - the version that will include new security features and is due by mid-2004, out to testers by the end of this year. And it's pushing to find ways to improve app compatibility for upgraders, using its application compatibility toolkit 3.0 and Virtual PC technologies, Poole added."
